Time Off

Time Off

"Let us go off by ourselves to some place where we will be alone and you can rest a while" --Mark 6:31

In spite of all that needed to be done, Jesus invited his followers to take time off and rest. When you are too busy to take time off, that may be the time when you need to do it the most. If you plan relation as part of your day, you may lessen those occasions when you are unable to find time for the quiet moments that bring renewal. How can you avoid personal impoverishment if you don not take the time to relax and refresh yourself?

Are you concerned that taking time away from your activities will make you less productive? Perhaps the concern is misplaced. It seems unlikely that any of us can be fully productive without the refreshment of time off. Continual work brings with it the law of diminishing returns. Eventually the returns become meager indeed. Have you ever noticed that in your life?

If you find yourself becoming compulsive about work, if you find yourself growing short-tempered, if you are becoming troublesome to others, think about taking some time off. Somehow the world will manage to get by while you relax, and it will even be better off if you return to it refreshed.

Lord, just as you invited your followers to rest, so you invite me. May I understand the importance of the invitation so that I might avoid the harm that comes from refusing to take time off.
