Topic of the Week, Words that begin with the letter "S"

S is for Serenity. Have it if you can. Don't let people, places, and things take it away from you.

S is Sobriety. My spiritual adviser said it mean "Soundness of mind." I found it through working the 12 Steps of recovery and applying them to all areas of my life. Addiction affects my mental, emotional, spiritual and physical well being. The drugs are but a symptom of my disease, the problem is me.

S is for Stop, Look, and Listen. What is happening in your life. Are you shut down and shut off or are you feeling true serenity?

S is for Sobriety. It does have it's rewards.

These are twelve attributes of personal character that continued practice of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and our continued Spiritual Fitness will bring to us, the "Recovered" Alcoholic.

Faith instead of despair.
Courage instead of fear.
Hope instead of desperation.
Peace of mind instead of confusion.
Real friendships instead of loneliness.
Self-respect instead of self-contempt.
Self-confidence instead of helplessness.
A clean conscience instead of a sense of guilt.
The respect of others instead of their pity and contempt.
A clean pattern of living instead of a hopeless existence.
The love and understanding of our families instead of their doubts and fears.
The freedom of a happy life instead of the bondage of an alcoholic obsession.

S is for Step

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. Lao Tsu

Same thing with a sobriety journey which is a lifetime journey taking one step at a time and "one day at a time".

S is for Slow. Slow down, easy does it. You didn't get sick over night, you don't get better over night. This is not a quick fix program. If you are still acting out in fear, wait for the faith to come before you take the next Step. I was told it was to be a fearless and moral inventory, so go back to Step Three and find a better understanding of your God so you can move forward with more faith.
