Default Grateful To Be Me

Grateful To Be Me

1 Timothy 4:4 “For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.”

I wanted to be a perfect wife. I longed to be everything my husband desired and make him happy that he married me. But my original objective turned into an obsession. I felt compelled to change my personality, values, beliefs, talents and hopes to match his. It looked good, but it felt awful.

Eventually my unrealistic “wifely” expectations led to burnout. The outward me could no longer live in such intense disharmony with the inner me. I knew I had to do something or crumble. Yet, the thought of changing the way we related to each other was extremely frightening.

“You won’t like me when you get to know the real me,” I said trembling.

“Yes, I will,” my husband assured me.

At first I didn’t believe him. Over time I grew more comfortable with letting him see the real me. I am learning to combine who I am on the inside with who I have the capabilities to be on the outside. The two are merging — slowly. And I am grateful.

Lord, please help me to be the person you created me to be.

The me you made is good enough.

I do not have to be perfect.

What a relief.
