Watch, Lord, with those in need

Watch, dear Lord,
with those who cannot sleep

Tend the sick,
give rest to the weary

Relieve those who are suffering,
have pity on those in great distress,
and shield those who are happy.

Men who come to God not to dictate but to receive have approached prayer from the right angle. They have seen that prayer is giving God an opportunity to bestow what he is more willing to give than we are to welcome.

"Prayer is not to ask what we wish of God, but what God wishes of us."

Harry Emerson Fosdick

Posted May 5, 2005 on my site The Five As and taken from a prayer book given to me by my aunt, who got it from her sister, who died when she was 21. My mom was 7 when she died, my aunt 5, and I was 2l when my mom past away. The book has a publishing date of 1918. Prayer is still working.

Praying with others across the world

Lord, you said that when two or three
would gather together in your name,
then you would be present with them.
I am praying by myself (or ‘on the Internet’)
but I am uniting myself
with many individual Christians
throughout the world
who, though separate,
are gathered together in another sense
to pray to you,
and I trust that you are with me now.

Back to Basics

Do you look back and remember
When your life was living H*ll?
When denial and deception reined.
Hopelessness was the outer shell?
Does that time in your life remain clear in your mind?
Reminders of powerlessness and fear that you find
To a hunt you; to discourage you; to drive you insane?

Then search down inside yourself and see if you can find
that unique and special person who is hiding just behind
All the anger, guilt, and resentment seething below
Or behind the many masks you allow the world to know.

An option is to take a risk and to set that person free
To take a step to freedom and to let the whole world see
The genuine, honest person you are desperately trying to be
But the choices that must be made, are left to you indeed
If the goal that you have set is for recovery to succeed.

So get back to basics; take it one day at a time
Remember easy does it; and Thy will be done; not mine.
And if you have slipped and had a fall,
And you feel as if you have lost it all?

Remember that you are human,
Mistakes are often made
To continue on this rocky road will end up in the trade
Of a life filled with promises, serenity and care
For a life filled with devastation, depression and despair.

Now, get back down to basics; and get right back on track
Learn how to focus, and not just to react
And begin to forgive yourself, so you can bring you back
To the road to sobriety, with recovery intact.

Through my God, all things are possible.

Quote:
Colossians 3:15

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

2 Thessalonians 3:16

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.

Proverbs 12:25

An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 40:28-31
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

John 4:10-14
Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?" Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

===============

Proverbs 5:1-22
My son, pay attention to my wisdom, listen well to my words of insight, that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths are crooked, but she knows it not. Now then, my sons, listen to me; do not turn aside from what I say. Keep to a path far from her, do not go near the door of her house, lest you give your best strength to others and your years to one who is cruel, lest strangers feast on your wealth and your toil enrich another man's house. At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent. You will say, "How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction! I would not obey my teachers or listen to my instructors. I have come to the brink of utter ruin in the midst of the whole assembly." Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares? Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers. May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer-- may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love. Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another man's wife? For a man's ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all his paths. The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast.

No matter who we understand our God to be, we can find the Good Orderly Direction anywhere we choose to look for it. It is about opening our minds and our hearts.

I was told to take what I needed and put the rest on the shelf until such a time as I may need it. Even if I didn't need it for myself, I may meet someone who does and I can pay it forward.

SOMETIMES...

We must be hurt in order to grow,

We must fail in order to know,

We must lose in order to gain.

Some Lessons are learned best only through pain.

SOMETIMES...

Our vision clears only after our eyes are washed with tears.

We have to be broken, so we can be tender,

We are sick so we can rest and think better on things more important than work or fun,

We are taken for trip near death, so we can assess how we've run.

SOMETIMES...

We have to suffer lack, so we can know God's provision,

We have to feel another's pain, so we can have a sense of mission.

So take heart, if you don't understand today,

Instead of grumbling, ask God what He means to say,

In order to learn you must endure, and learn to see the bigger picture.

In order to grow, you must stand and look beyond the hurt,

Trust in God's loving hand that takes what is Good, and gives what is Best,

And on this blessed thought, rest your anxious heart with all the questions,

God's hand only gives what his loving heart dictates,

SOMETIMES...

The Lord calms the storm,

SOMETIMES...

He lets the storm rage... and calms His child...

Better go through the storm with Him,

Than smooth waters without Him...

When I came into recovery, it was stop the world I want to get off. Didn't think I qualified, but I thought if I just tagged along, said the words, they would let me stay long enough for me to find out what they had.

Grew up in the church, very active in the church (three times on Sunday, prayer meeting and young people's). I sang with my sisters during church services, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School.

My father was the preacher's son and I was the preacher's son's daughter.

I had to re-define who God was to me and regain my faith and trust.

For those who mourn

Lord Jesus, you tell us
that those who mourn are “blessed”,
knowing that only those who love greatly
can mourn.
We know, too,
that it is better
to have loved and lost someone
than never to have loved at all.
Be with ______
and may the members of his/her family
be strengthened,
knowing that others care for them
and hold them in prayer. Amen.

This picture reminds me of all the demons we carried. I know I thought it and met others who thought, that they belonged in a mental hospital instead of needing to be in a recovery program, which was often the original source that brought the demons out.

Psalm 23

Lord, you are like a shepherd to me,
and so I have all that I need.
You give me rest
in meadows of green grass,
and you lead me to water
where I gain new life and strength.
You guide me
along the way that is best for me.
Even when I walk in darkness
and everything around seems like death,
you are there, walking with me,
and the promise
of your love and faithfulness
helps to conquer my fear.
In the sight of those who do me down,
you invite me
to sit at table with you.
There you offer me
even more than I need,
and you remind me
that I am significant and special.
You call me to goodness and kindness
every day of my life,
and your house will be my home
my whole life long.

Father and lover of life,
you know the depths of my innermost self,
and you understand me.
You protect me on every side,
shielding me from all harm.
When you put me together
in my mother’s womb,
you knew all about me.
I thank you for the wonder of myself,
and I stand in awe
at all that you have made.
As you know and love me,
so may I come to know and love you.
Guide me in your ways.

Transform, Lord, my weakness and poverty

Look, Lord,
on an empty vessel that needs to be filled.
In faith I am weak - strengthen me.
In love I am cold - warm me and make me fervent
so that my love may go out to my neighbour.
I doubt and am unable to trust you completely.
Lord, strengthen my faith and trust in you.
You are all the treasure I possess.
I am poor, you are rich,
and you came to have mercy on the poor.
I am a sinner, you are goodness.
From you I can receive goodness,
but I can give you nothing.
Therefore I shall stay with you.
